Why trade square footage for freedom?

Updated: Jul 15

There’s a moment, quiet but powerful, when you realize your life doesn’t have to look the way it always has. For us, that moment came on an ordinary evening at our local brew pub with a not-so-ordinary thought: What if we sold everything and hit the road? It sounded crazy at first. We had a beautiful, new home—2,400 square feet of space we once believed would be our “forever” place. We poured time, energy, and love into every corner of it. But somewhere between daily routines and weekend projects, a whisper started to grow louder: Is this really what we want?

The Spark of Change

That question took root during a casual night with good beer and the kind of conversation that drifts into an actual possibility. It wasn’t a formal decision, but it planted a seed. Over the next six months, we dove deep into research about full-time RV living, fifth wheels, and what it truly means to live with less and experience more. We fell down YouTube rabbit holes, binge-watched RV reviews, took mental notes at dealerships, and walked in and out of models at RV shows. Slowly but surely, we narrowed down our list and chose a Brinkley Z-3100 fifth wheel—a comfortable 35-foot couples coach that has the quality and durability we needed for full-time living. With that choice made, everything else started to click into place.

Letting Go of More Than Just "Stuff"

Selling our home wasn’t just about unloading property—it was about releasing the expectations and weight we didn’t even realize we were carrying. The oversized furniture, the packed closets, the endless to-do lists... it all started to feel like a life we no longer needed. The house sold within 30 days and the buyer even purchased our furniture. It felt like the universe saying, This is the right path. Keep going.

Choosing Freedom Over Familiarity

Trading a fixed address for an RV might sound crazy for some, but for us it meant waking up to mountain views in Glacier, Montana and falling asleep to the crash of ocean waves just feet from our door in Coos Bay, Oregon. It meant more sunsets and fewer chores - more experiences, fewer possessions.

Why a Fifth Wheel?

If you're considering the RV lifestyle, here's why we chose a fifth wheel:

  • Spacious interior for full-time living

  • Stability and towing ease with a truck

  • Residential-style features that made the transition easier

  • Better insulation and storage for year-round travel

We found that fifth wheels are a perfect balance between comfort and mobility, especially for us. We wanted to be happy with our choice and know that we didn't sacrifice the things that make life easier and more comfortable while living on the road.

Our adventures began in November 2023. We are heading toward 2 years on the road, have traveled almost 12,000 miles and seen 36 states. From national parks and hidden gems, to coffee shops in small towns and sunsets in wide-open campgrounds, we’re learning that home isn’t a place—it’s a feeling.
